The Maldives Floating City's layout is inspired by its local brain coral. Protected from waves by the surrounding atoll, it will be home to 20,000 residents, 10 minutes from the capital city, Malé.
And they're not alone. Saudi Arabia is building their own floating city, OXAGON, targeting completion by 2030. But OXAGON is motivated not by a pressing housing shortage, instead meant to serve as a hub of industry, commerce, and tourism.

When built, OXAGON will be the largest floating structure in the world, housing 90,000.
